plan-my-route

It’s a shame I haven’t written about this yet, but just wanted to write briefly about a handy little application I wrote for my wife almost a year ago: plan-my-route.

The impetus for this was that my wife would plan to go to garage sales on Friday nights, but it would take her at least an hour to get any sort of good route planned out (ie: any route that wouldn’t take us half way to Virginia and back). Now, it takes her less than 15 minutes to get a really great route planned out. Check out the one I just planned for us.

It allows you to specify a starting point, and any number of destinations you would like to visit. By default it plots the addresses as you enter them, but you can optimize your route and it will plot the addresses in order of proximity from one another. The app will always bring you back to your starting point, so no need to ever get reverse directions.

One cool feature that I don’t use really much is the ability to use search terms to find the places you want to visit. It uses the Google Local Search capabilities, so you can type in “drug store”, and the app will find one of the nearest drug stores to you and plot it on your route when you want to go there (eg: you want to go the post office, then to the grocery store, and then 123 Main St. Your route will plot it in that order). If you choose to optimize your route it can handle that too.

So enjoy it. It’s free! Find bugs! Request features! Give me a reason to work on it some more :-)
